Prescription drugs and addiction

It is not uncommon for a person to require medication for a condition that they must obtain from a pharmacist versus being able to purchase it over the counter. There may be many reasons that a drug is available by prescription only and the potential for side effects, including addiction, may be one of those reasons.

Prescriptions not always safe

As explained by Healthline, simply because a medical professional recommends a person use a specific drug does not mean that the medication is without some potential risks or that it is completely safe. Use of any medication, prescription or over the counter, may be associated with any number of complications or side effects. Drug use disorder is a condition that is marked in part by drug addiction.

Drugs and your brain

According to WebMD, any medication has the potential to literally change how a person’s brain functions, even if the medication was not prescribed for a brain-related issue. Taking addictive drugs may result in a person developing strong urges for more of the drug in order to gain the same effect or benefit. A person’s brain may be changed to the point where they can no longer make good decisions for themselves and they may lose vital self control.

Most addictive prescription drugs

Medications from the opioid family, commonly used to reduce or manage pain, are among some of the most addictive medications prescribed by doctors, dentists and other health care professionals. Drugs used to manage anxiety, attention disorders and more may also cause addictions. These may include stimulants or depressants.
